Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
If you’re pregnant, ultrasound is essential for protecting your health. This simple scan uses sound waves to create an image of your pregnancy, giving you key details you need to know—no matter what pregnancy choice you’re considering.
Ultrasounds confirm three details of pregnancy:
1. Viability (whether your pregnancy is progressing)
2. Pregnancy Location (if it’s growing within the uterus)
3. How far along you are (gestational age)
Ultrasounds help physicians rule out any possible complications or abnormalities as well. Possible complications could be a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy (where the pregnancy grows outside the uterus).
How Do Ultrasounds Work?
Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves that create images of the inside of the uterus on the screen. It’s a very safe and effective pregnancy service. There are two types of ultrasounds used during pregnancy, depending on how far along you are: transvaginal or abdominal.
Transvaginal Ultrasound
This type of ultrasound is used earlier in pregnancy as it gives a clearer picture. With a transvaginal ultrasound, the nurse will gently insert the ultrasound transducer (the wand-like part of the ultrasound machine) into your vagina. You may feel slight pressure as the nurse moves the wand to gain a picture of your pregnancy.
Abdominal Ultrasound
This ultrasound procedure is typically done later in pregnancy. With an abdominal ultrasound, the nurse will squirt a jelly-like substance onto your abdomen and move the transducer around. You can see your pregnancy on the ultrasound screen during both types of ultrasound if desired.
